All windshield wiper blades eventually wear out. For the sake of driving safety, it is important to replace them before obscured vision in inclement weather leads to a crash. Aside from dirt buildup, wiper blades are vulnerable to ultraviolet radiation, ozone, and airborne chemicals that combine to degrade the rubber compound. Petroleum elements from the road surface also leech into the rubber, causing it to stiffen, in which case their edges will not conform properly to the changing angle of the windshield. To prevent this problem, wipers should be used in conjunction with weekly washer-fluid sprays. Otherwise, blades should be cleaned with washer solution and a clean rag monthly. When signs of wear or stiffness appear, they should be replaced.
